The Vertical Flying Car is on its way!!!

Terrafugia, the small, privately held American corporation that developed the first ever road-able aircraft dubbed the ”Transition” has plans for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) sibling.

The Terrafugia TF-X flying car can take off vertically and has a flying range of 805km. Once airborne, the two propellers fold back and propulsion is handled by an engine mounted behind the cockpit. The proposed Terrafugia TF-X would be a tilt-rotor flying machine that would take off and land like a helicopter. Instead of a runway, the TF-X could use a helipad or parking lot.

A working model of the aircraft is expected to become available to purchase within eight to 12 years.Meanwhile Terrafugia’s earlier flying car concept, the Transition, which last year flew for eight minutes at an altitude of 420 metres during its test flight, is set to become available to buy within two years, priced at £190,000.

Propulsion of the ”Terrafugia TF-X” appears to be a gas turbine for horizontal flight and hybrid electric for ground travel. For liftoff and landing, the rotors would be turned electrically via a generator and battery storage, as would the road wheels. The Terrafugia TF-X has been described as a nearly vertical take-off and landing aircraft, needing an area with a diameter of about 100 feet. That’s still easier to find than a 2,500-foot runway.

The Terrafugia TF-X  may be a thing of the future for private/personal aviation but the ”Transition” has already shown that flying your car is no longer a fantasy. One thing is for sure, traveling will be more thrilling & fun then it already is.
