The T-90 MS ”Tagil”

photo-472The modernized version of the Russian flying tank T-90,the T-90 MS is the latest modification of the most popular combat Tank in the Non-Western World, the T-90.The ”Tagil” was first revealed in 2011. It is being proposed for the Russian Army and possible export operators, including India.

Powered by a thrusty roaring new V-92S2F diesel ,1,250 PS/1130HP (920 kW) Engine, the T-90 MS can ride at speeds of up to 72kms which is an astonishing speed for a 48 ton Battle tank and has a  range of 550kms.

The T-90 MS seems to carry the ”Modernized” tag very well with an all new turret incorporating the Kalina modernized targeting system, which is integrated with the squad commander’s control system. It has enhanced firepower with the upgraded 2A46M-5 cannon and a new air defense machine gun. This gun has increased range of fire over the previous weapon. It fires APFSDS, HE and HE-Frag rounds & also the 9K119 Refleks (NATO designation AT-11 Sniper-B) anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner as ordinary munitions. These missiles have a range of 4-5 km and can also engage low-flying helicopters. Secondary armament consists of coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun and a remotely controlled weapon station, also armed with a 7.62-mm machine gun. Both machine guns are operated under armor.

A total of 40 rounds a carried for the main gun. The T-90MS uses a proven carousel-type autoloader. As with it’s predecessor 22 rounds are stored in the auto loader and are ready to use. One new significant feature of the ‘Tagil” is that rounds are stored in a new turret bustle rather than a crew compartment in order to avoid risks of explosion.

The T-90MS also has an upgraded defense mechanism with the new version of the explosive reactive armor called Relict in place of the previous Kontakt-5. The Tagil is fitted with side skirts with built-in Relikt ERA.Its armor was modified to better withstand fire.

This main battle tank has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver.
