R.D National College & W.A Science College(Bandra Nationals College)

R.D. National College is the first college of the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board. Today this Board has over 22 educational institutions catering to students from all backgrounds. A variety of courses are offered, ranging from Engineering, Pharmacy and Education to Arts, Science and Commerce.

Established originally in 1922 with the blessings of Dr. Annie Besant and Rishi Dayaram Gidumal, the college saw a shift in its location from Hyderabad (Sind) to Bombay in 1949. This was brought about through the tireless efforts of the founder Principal Mr. K.M. Kundnani with unstinted support from barrister H.G. Advani. Mr. Kundnani was the Principal of the college in Sind and in a moment of emotional impulse promised his harried and anguished teachers that he would give them jobs in Bombay where he intended to start a college.

The college stage has been the launching pad of many creative talents. Amjad Khan, the fiery dacoit of ‘Sholay’ learnt and developed his acting talents on the college stage. Jaaved Jaffri, put on his dancing shoes first on this stage. There are many more to whom the college has given unflinching support in the realization of their talents. The College has a very dynamic faculty and has had stalwarts like Prof. Sadanand Varde, ex-Education Minister, Prof.Vasant Bapat the great Marathi playwright, Prof. Lila D’Souza, former principal at St.Andrew’s College, imparting education to students.

St. Xavier’s College

St-Xavier-College-MumbaiSt. Xavier’s College, is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th Century who travelled to India. The College was founded by the Society of Jesus, a Christian Religious Group started by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540

The College makes a preferential option for the marginalised and it seeks to give an all-round formation, inculcating both human and spiritual values. St. Xavier’s College is only a part of the vast educational efforts of the Jesuits in India and throughout the world. At present Jesuits run about 100 schools, 24 colleges, and innumerable non-formal and adult education centres in India, and all these form part of the effort of the Catholic Church to share in the vital task of education in our land.

On January 30, 1869, St. Xavier’s College was affiliated to the University of Bombay. It is entrusted by the University with the task of preparing students for degrees in Arts, Science and Commerce.

St. Xavier’s College, with its rich tradition and international reputation, has spawned a host of other educational ventures down the years, some of which have moved out of the campus to their own campuses. The St. Xavier’s Institute of Education is now situated at Churchgate and offers Teacher Training Courses. The Xavier Institute of Engineering has a large campus at Mahim.

Sathaye College

sathyeFuelled by the desire to provide the suburbs with an avenue for pursuing higher education, philanthropists like Shri Baburao Paranjpe and others established ‘Parle College’ in 1959.

Initially, while the college building on Dixit road was still under construction, classes were conducted in Parle Tilak Vidyalaya High School. The foundation stone for the college building was laid on 4th November, 1959 by Shri Ganesh Hari Pethe, the President of the Institution.

Prof. C.B. Joshi, an able academician, renowned geographer, and a Cambridge scholar took over as the first Principal of the college. His wide contacts and his standing in academic circles soon attracted the best teaching talents in all departments. The college was equipped with a well-stocked library and laboratories. In keeping with the visions of the founding fathers, a moral guidance scheme was initiated for students. For the convenience of employed students there were special classes in the early mornings and late evening. To encourage academic excellence a scheme was launched inviting research papers from teachers.
