Naxalite Menace in India.

For years,India is facing the Problem of Naxalite-Maoist insurgency. The name ”Naxal” comes from a village named Naxalbari in the Indian State of West Bengal.

As per 2009 Reports,Naxalites were active across approximately 220 districts in twenty states of India. The Area wherein the their numbers are the most is known as the Red Corridor.Practically all Naxalite groups trace their origin to the CPI(ML).All most all Political Parties in India oppose them.

In late May, 2009 in Lalgarh, West Bengal the Naxalites threw out the local police and staged attacks against the ruling communist government. However,it quickly became clear that in the name of politics & social movements, the Naxals were threatening the Sovereignty of the country.Naxalite movement in Lalgarh in 2009 was aimed at creating a so called “liberated zone”.Swiftly, the state government initiated a major operation, with central paramilitary forces and state armed police, to retake Lalgarh in early June.

The Naxalites claim to represent the most oppressed people in India, those who are often left untouched by India’s development and bypassed by the electoral process.  Invariably, they are the Adivasis, Dalits, and the poorest of the poor, who work as landless labourers for a pittance, often below India’s mandated minimum wages. However in reality, despite their ideology, they have over the years become just another terrorist outfit, extorting money from middle-level landowners (since rich landowners invariably buy protection), and worse, even extorting and dominating the lives of the Adivasis and villagers who they claim to represent in the name of providing justice.Along with Police & Paramilitary Personnel, the Naxalities have also started targeting & killing innocent people. Many recent reports also indicate that the Naxals also forcefully takeaway children & men from nearby villages for recruitement & also harassment of women.

The Naxalities have been using explosives & arms used by conventional Terrorists. Many lives have been lost to the IEDs planted by them. There are many reports wherein Plice establishments & camps have been attacked. The Naxalities know no mercy. They kill citizens & police personnel alike.

The biggest hurdle faced by the police & paramilitary Personnel in combating these terrorists is the vast Jungle area in which the naxalities operate.Fierce skirmishes have taken place between the police & naxalities.

One of the most recent Brutal attacks of the naxalities comprise of the Gyaneshwari Express derailment killing more than 140 people & injuring more than 180.

The State Governments with the help of the Central Government have now been able to control this menace.

Violence in Lalgarh, West Bengal in June, killing of Francis Induwar, Inspector, Special Branch Jharkhand Police on Oct 6, seventeen Maharashtra policemen in Gadichiroli in Maharashtra on Oct 8, three policemen of the West Bengal police on October 20 bear a testimony to their open war against the state. They even forced the West Bengal Government to bow down to their demands for release of Maoists in exchange of Atindranath Dutta, officer in-charge of the Sankrail police station. The CPI (Maoist) along with People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) held the Bhubhaneshwar – New Delhi Rajdhani express hostage for five hours on October 27. Owing to the killings of police personnel, the latter refuse to go to the naxal affected areas. Violence is the most potent tool used by the Maoists to get attention.Since they oppose democracy, it is quite impossible for them to dominate mainstream India.

The Govt has ruled out the use of army to fight them but has announced increase of paramilitary forces.  Operation Green hunt, Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA), Jaguar Force etc which have been trained for such purposes have been Deployed in the naxal infected areas. Also, the indirect support of the Indian Airforce has supportes a lot for the Govt. forces.

With the growing Attrocities committed by the naxalities, the Govt. is now considering bringing in the Armed forces directly in combat with these terrorists. The Army on its part has expressed full confidence & preparedness against the naxals.

After studying the History & Intentions of the Naxalities,it is now clear that the Naxalities have transformed from social protesters to hardcore terrorists. If they are not dealth with now, they are going to create more problem. The Government’s attempts to bring them on talking terms & peace have failed as they don’t seem to be interested in peace. However,is it sure that sooner, the Naxalite menace will be wiped out,if not by the Police & Paramilitary, then by the Armed Forces!

Afterall, the main motive of the government is to maintain the Law & Order situation in the country & to protect the sovereignty of the country, thereby, nurturing peace & harmony in the Largest Democracy in the World.
